 How to Build a Basic Anti-Ageing Routine Without Overloading Your Skin

Anti-ageing skincare sounds like rocket science, but the base is actually simple. You don’t need a 12-step routine and five serums to start taking care of your skin.

Think of three pillars: protection, repair, and support.

Protection means sunscreen. UV light is one of the biggest causes of early lines, spots and uneven tone. A broad-spectrum SPF (30 or above), used daily and in enough quantity, is your first anti-ageing product whether you’re 25 or 45.

Repair often involves ingredients that gently encourage skin renewal—like retinoids/retinol or certain acids. These can be powerful, so it’s best to start low and slow, and ideally get a dermatologist’s guidance if you’re unsure. Night is usually when you use them.

Support is about keeping your skin barrier healthy—using a moisturiser that suits your skin type, not over-washing, and avoiding very harsh scrubs that cause micro-damage.

You don’t need everything at once. A basic routine can be:
Morning – gentle cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen.
Night – cleanser, one targeted treatment (if any), moisturiser.

Lifestyle—sleep, food, stress, smoking, alcohol—plays a bigger role in ageing than one fancy cream. So, build a routine that your life can actually support daily, not just a shelf full of unused products.
