City air isn’t just dust—it’s a cocktail of tiny particles, smoke, fumes and other pollutants. These can stick to your skin, generate oxidative stress, and slowly damage the protective barrier.
Over time, this may show up as dullness, rough texture, more breakouts, or irritation. If your barrier is compromised, products that were fine earlier suddenly start “burning” or stinging.
Daily protection starts with cleansing properly at the end of the day. If you’re out in traffic or wear makeup/sunscreen, a double cleanse (oil/balm + gentle cleanser) helps lift off grime without scrubbing harshly.
Antioxidants like vitamin C, E, or certain plant extracts in serums or creams can help fight some pollution-related stress. They’re not magic shields, but part of the defence team.
Strengthening your barrier with consistent moisturising is key. Look for ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and similar ingredients that support hydration.
Sunscreen matters too, because UV plus pollution is a double hit.
If you commute through heavy dust or smoke, a simple physical barrier—like a scarf or mask—also helps, not just for lungs but for skin.
The idea isn’t to be scared of going outside, but to give your skin a proper “reset” every night so it can repair peacefully.
