Fragrance in skincare is a bit like masala in food—many people enjoy it, but some stomachs (or skins) can’t handle much.
If you have very sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea, or a history of unexplained rashes, fragrance-free products are usually safer. Fragrances—synthetic or natural essential oils—are common irritants and allergens.
On labels, fragrance can appear as “fragrance”, “parfum”, “perfume”, or “aroma”. Essential oils may be listed by name: lavender oil, citrus peel oil, eucalyptus, etc. “Unscented” doesn’t always mean fragrance-free; sometimes fragrance is added just to mask another smell.
For some people, small amounts of fragrance in rinse-off products (face wash, body wash) are tolerable, but leave-on products (serums, creams) cause trouble. You have to observe your own skin.
If you notice stinging, redness or itching after using a fancy “smells amazing” product, don’t push through it. Switch to something simpler, and your skin may calm down.
Fragrance-free may feel “boring”, but calm, non-angry skin is usually worth it—especially if you’re already dealing with other issues like acne or pigmentation.
