Mouthwash has a very “fresh” image—strong mint flavour, cooling feel—and clever marketing. But do you really need it?
For most people, the basics still win: proper brushing + cleaning between teeth. Mouthwash is an add-on, not a replacement. If you’re using it instead of brushing because you’re tired or in a hurry, that’s a problem.
Mouthwash can help in certain situations:
- After dental procedures, when your dentist prescribes a medicated rinse for gums or infections.
- For people with braces or limited hand movement, where extra rinsing helps reach tricky areas.
- For temporary control of strong bad breath, along with treating the cause.
Alcohol-based mouthwashes can dry the mouth for some people, making things worse long-term. There are alcohol-free options that are gentler.
If you’re just grabbing a random colourful bottle from the shelf because “it must be good”, you might be wasting money. Always read how often it should be used and for how long. Some medicated mouthwashes are not meant for indefinite daily use.
If you brush properly, clean between teeth, drink enough water and see your dentist regularly, you may not need a mouthwash at all. If you’re unsure, ask your dentist which type—if any—makes sense for your mouth.
